The Trump White House has dropped its decision to refer to the United States as “the world’s largest democracy” in a move aimed at defusing tensions with allies over Russia’s involvement in Ukraine.
The White House had previously referred to the country as the “United States of America.”
President Donald Trump, who has often criticized NATO allies, used the phrase in an interview with ABC News’ “This Week” program on Wednesday.
He said the U.S. has a responsibility to be “strong” and “stronger” in defending the world.
The White House is also trying to show that “America is always going to be a leader in the world,” he said.
The move is an attempt to defuse tensions over Russia, which is also the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Australia and New Zealand, among others.
Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone last week, and the two leaders held their first meeting since Trump took office in January.
